With the approval of the Biosafety Law (LAW 11.105/2005), research with embryonic stem cells became permitted in Brazil; however, the law establishes some restrictions on research with embryonic stem cells, such as: “embryos must have been frozen for at least three years, may only be used with the consent of the parents, the sale of embryos, as well as their production and genetic manipulation, will not be permitted, and furthermore, therapeutic cloning for research purposes and reproductive cloning are prohibited”

Stem cell therapies are still in the research phase and may only be applied experimentally by researchers whose research project has been previously approved by Research Ethics Committees.
